I don't know about your plants, but with this current heat wave, mine are on the droopy side. The question is, how to keep the plants happy but not see a huge jump in the water bill? For one, I only water my plants and not the lawn. It always greens back up in the fall and I don't have to mow as often (bonus points). I water in the morning or evening when it is cooler. I invested in a few soaker hoses for the driest parts of the yard so I can water them deeply and less often. My rain barrel project didn't happen this year but next year I'm looking forward to lots of free rainwater off of my roof. For more ideas, the City of Seattle has some great tips on how to keep your plants happy and be efficient with water this time of year. I have been experimenting with another type of irrigation this year. Ollas are a type of irrigation that has been around for about 4,000 years. It's an unglazed clay pot that has a wide base and narrow neck. It's buried underground with just the top of the neck showing. Fill it with water and it gently seeps out into the soil as the roots need it. You can buy beautifully made ollas but they are quite easy to make. I made a few this spring and was pleased in how they turned out. Here's what you need to make your own, I adapted mine from the video below:
